So come and discover the magic of The Gambia, and be part of something exceptional. The 100th Monkey phenomenonOn the island of Koshima, scientists provided Japanese monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. Although the monkeys appeared to like the taste of the sweet potatoes, they didn’t like the dirt. Upon observation, a solution was discovered by an 18 month old monkey. She learned that she could wash the potatoes in a nearby stream. Her fellow playmates caught on and ultimately then taught the others. The scientists watched on while all the young monkeys gradually learnt to wash their potatoes. Then something astonishing occurred. When the sun rose one morning a certain amount of monkeys, let’s say 99 having grasped the technique, were washing sweet potatoes. Later that day, the 100th monkey learnt too. By that evening the scientists observed that all monkeys were now washing their sweet potatoes before eating them. Somehow, the added energy of this 100th monkey encouraged the acceptance of the technique as the general principle. What was once a ‘new ideological breakthrough’, was now the norm. The most extraordinary thing that the scientists then witnessed, was that the new habit of washing potatoes had somehow jumped over the sea to other islands, and onto the mainland. The ‘100th monkey phenomenon’ merely identifies a watershed at which an isolated edict becomes common thinking of what is right. The benefit and knowledge of a new principle extends to all once a critical mass is reached. By supporting environmental developments globally, as common, intelligent practise, such a principle will become the norm. The first numbers are the path finders.
